Greece is the Word – Day Eleven

I feel we are staying at the perfect location. Not in the centre of Naxos city but close enough and with enough restaurants and stores to keep us fed and occupied. The rest of our party is just loving the sea which is just metres from our rooms.

Hubby and I went for an early stroll along the water. It’s so peaceful and calm at that time.

We stopped to get some coffee and pastries.

The ordering system sometimes confuses me a bit.
In any case we got a spinach pie and what we thought was a sausage and cheese pie. When we bit into it, we realised the “sausage” was a hot dog type sausage.
It was still ok, just not what we were expecting.

After checkout we headed into Naxos. We were wanting to see the older part of the city and of course, Apollo’s temple which are doorlike ruins of an ancient temple standing on a scenic point looking over the city and sea.

It was a very warm day and the walk up to the top of the older part/castle was challenging at times but it was really interesting to see the white buildings and the stairs going up and up and up, draped by colourful bougainvillea.

We started to wonder about the population here and if most of the homes are holiday homes or if there is a resident population. It would be interesting to see what it’s like in the off season.

We haven’t had pizza since we’ve been here and today was as good a day as any. I really enjoyed what we had. It was pretty cheesy!! But apparently it was not “Greek” style. We’ve got that to look forward to yet..

Before we got back on the ferry for Athens, we stocked up on snacks like the smart people do. Next time we’ll try to remember to bring a deck of cards too!! It’s a long trip back. I was eating some of the spanokopita we’d bought, mostly out of boredom, and said to hubby “eat some too!” and he replied “why? because if I don’t eat it now there won’t be any left for me?”
He knows me well.

Oh, and both on this trip, and the trip over, I was surprised to find children begging on the boat. How do they even get on there? Do adults sneak them on to do the begging? Has someone bought them a ticket so they can beg? It’s sad to see and hard to resist. That’s probably why they do it. Who can say no to a kid saying “do you have any money so I can have something to eat?” or something similar.

The bathrooms on the ferry had an sea view by the way! I was going to take a photo but unfortunately, I fell asleep and by the time I went back there, it was already dark.

I was dreading this long trip back but actually it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Sleeping through most of it probably helped.
Sadly, our time is almost to an end here in this gorgeous historical country but there may be a surprise coming up…. stay tuned!

Burek Lounge

Today on the Dining Diaries…

We visit a place that would have vegetarians quaking in their boots,
Balkan music played along nicely in the background while we ate food from the region and
We almost got into meat sweats territory!!

Diners today we were at Burek Lounge.

This place has been popping up on my facebook newsfeed for some time, tempting me with pictures of enormous meat platters at very reasonable prices.

It just seemed too good to be true!

I had no idea where hubby was taking me as we just continued driving south along Tapley’s Hill Rd in Adelaide’s Western Suburbs. Even if I ask he won’t tell me, I’m supposed to just enjoy the “thing I can’t get out of” “surprise”

When he made the turn onto Grange rd, and then Findon rd, I twigged! We were going to Burek Lounge!
I’ve heard great things about this place so I was keen to see what it was like.

bur5When we got there I was a bit disappointed as it’s just a small shop front. It didn’t look like a restaurant, more like a shop that was once a corner deli, with cleared floor space for tables and chairs. It was neat, clean and modern looking, just a lot smaller then I expected.

As soon as we got out the car though, I could smell BBQ meat!! I’m not a huge meat lover but it really had me salivating! It just smelt so good!

The gentleman behind the counter was a little shy and soft spoken but was eager to tell us about the food. He said the food comes from the general Balkan region and at the same time, I noticed the music which I guess was also from the Balkan region. Loved that!

The menu was full of meat items although they did have a vegetarian pastry… still, if you’re vegetarian I’m not sure that this is the place for you…
Sadly they didn’t have any fries, wedges or even dips. But that was ok too because the food we had was really quite exceptional!

I must admit, when he said “wood fired pastries” I was thinking desserts…. but no, they’re savoury pastries. Seeing as we were having heavy meat mains, we went for the spinach and ricotta pastry to share for an entree.

We had told him we were sharing so he took the liberty to cut it in half.

Hubby was not happy with that at all because when he says “share” he means I get thirty percent and he gets seventy percent.

I’m not sure what kind of pastry that is. Maybe filo? The pastry was quite thick though and it didn’t really have a lot of taste. It was nice, but it was probably my least favourite thing I ate there today.

Perhaps a meat filled one would have been better. It’s a bit hard to say. I also suspect it was just heated in the microwave but I was really really hoping I was wrong.

The server brought the mains out pretty much right away and everything was magical from then on!

I chose the “Steak Serve” – Two Rib Eye Steaks with Turkish Bread and side of Greek Salad. However it didn’t come with a Greek Salad Side, it was a Potato Salad and it was just as nice.

You can see there is also a capsicum salsa on the plate. I can’t even begin to describe how good everything was. That meat was sooooo tender I could have blown on it and it would have come apart.  The Turkish bread was toasted perfectly, the capsicum salsa was just a lovely surprise that lifted everything on the plate. I was just in raptures with it!
I probably shouldn’t admit this but I ended up putting one of the pieces of meat in the Turkish bread and having it like a “steak sandwich”. Delicious!

Hubby ordered the “Mixed Grill” for one – Sausage, Pattie, Steak, Shaslick, 3 Cevapi and Turkish Bread.

Hubby said everything he had was good, but he didn’t seem to be as enthused as I was, and he’s the meat eater!!!

He didn’t have any complaints though. I tried some of his pattie and thought it was just bursting with amazing flavours!! These guys are passionate about BBQ meat!!

Even the salad was delicious!! There was a generous amount of dressing in there and the ingredients were so fresh! It just make such a difference!

I asked the server how long they’d been there and I think he said about four years, although they’ve only just picked up their Social Media pages in the last eighteen months or so.

If you haven’t already liked their facebook page and you live in Adelaide, I’d urge you to do so as they have regular specials that are really worth going down there for!

Lockleys Hotel

Today on the Dining Diaries…

A stake steak right to hubby’s heart
A diner gets as fresh as the salad bar and..
I find out what lamb florentine is and marvel at this gastronomic brilliance!

lockleys-hotel-3494-1Today we are at the Lockelys Hotel.

Hubby and I were a little hesitant in coming here because we had the impression it was a dive.
In fact he said to me “We don’t have to stay there. If we get there and don’t like it we’ll leave”

But we didn’t have to leave and I’m glad. It ended up being one of our best dining experiences.

We had to wait for dinner service to start because again, we’d missed lunch and were ravenously hungry at 5pm.
We took ourselves into the Sports Bar to wait. It was very busy and loud and noticeably, I was the only woman in there.
The bar staff were lovely and the fireplace was heavenly!

We went over to the Bistro area when dinner service started and hubby was in heaven because unexpectedly, there was a  salad bar there and he’s just so enamored with them at the moment.
We were sat close to where diners were coming in and it soon became apparent that a lot of them were regulars. There was good banter between servers and customers and in fact, one cheeky old fella was chatting up a pretty young girl while his wife was standing next to him!
But it was all in fun.

The menu was simple but good. As I walked up to the counter to order I still didn’t know what I was going to have. Hubby went for the 400g Portherhouse Steak.
At the counter I noticed the specials board and I ordered the Lamb Florentine without really knowing what Florentine was… in fact, not knowing at all – no inkling – nothing.
I’m not normally that adventurous.

We watched other food coming out and it all looked sooooo delicious!!! So many people were ordering the sliders. The servings looked large and were just mouth watering.
While we waited for ours we visited the Salad Bar and although there wasn’t a huge selection, what was there was fresh and quality. There were only cold salads including a potato salad, beans, pasta salad etc etc but everything was tasty and it didn’t seem to be an afterthought as some salad bars tend to be.

Then our food came.
They  both looked so good!
We have had food that looked good and didn’t taste good before though…
Hubby sliced through and saw that good juicy pinkness and was encouraged – the taste was even better than he could have imagined. Tender, melting in his mouth like butter.  He didn’t even want to have it with the sauce as he said that would ruin the taste.
He also said that every little bit of gristle had been removed and every mouthful was that tender goodness.
I wouldn’t know because he didn’t share any with me even though I shared mine. He said it was too good to share.

I was equally happy with mine. I had no idea what it was going to be but when it came, I saw the lamb had been wrapped in pastry that was lined with spinach and bacon. Yum!

It was a big serve too! The first thing I tried was the mash which was just divine! It had mixed in with that wonderful jus and I don’t know what else was in there but it was just such a pleasure to eat.
The pastry from the lamb florentine just flaked away beautifully and the spinach was a really nice taste balancer. I really loved this dish and we both took our time eating our meals.

If I have to have any negatives it’s that there was no dressing in either of our salads and while the servers were nice and friendly, it did seem like they were just doing their jobs and not really interested in whatever you might have to say – but I’m being very harsh and this is a bistro after all. They certainly weren’t rude. I think they just would benefit from more experience.

The website site for the hotel says they have a new chef and this is a new menu. I’m not sure how long he’s been there but he’s a wonderful addition if this is the food he’s producing. It’s not often that hubby says “I want to come back here” after he’s only taken a few mouthful’s of food!! He even said that this is the best steak he’s had in at least six months so there you have it!

Definitely a huge recommendation for us.
