Today on the Dining Diaries…

As meat platters appear on other people’s tables, dining envy grows,
Special moussaka was truly special  and
One of us is already setting the date for our next visit and he definitely will be  ordering a meat platter.

Diners today we were at Kaffana in that ever happening, “Hipster” paradise, Peel Street.

18767414_1429320747127999_1531879982924820872_n.jpgKaffana is a Serbian Meat restaurant and hubby had been seeing their ads on Facebook for sometime and has been getting quite enticed by them! I mean how can a meat lover go past those pictures of meat trays!

We were here at 6pm on a Friday night. It was heavily booked. Lots of people were waiting to enter the dining room.
Dim lighting, easy listening music in the background, exposed red brick walls and lots of wood all contributed to making us feel comfortable and welcome.


A server finally called our name and brought us to our table. I wasn’t sure who she was at first as she was a tiny thing in old sneakers and a black beanie with a few strands of platinum blonde hair coming through. But maybe that’s just the way things are in this sort of place.

The menu was pretty cute although it was a bit hard to see because of the dim lighting. They have old “little golden books” there and have pasted their menu to the pages of the story. I liked the idea, especially as I was always walking around with at least one “little golden book” in my hand when I was a kid.

Hubby and I had a look through the menu and he was so disappointed when I said I just couldn’t see myself having half a meat tray. I don’t mind meat, sometimes I even like it but in small quantities. I did feel a little bad for him though when other tables near us started having meat trays brought out to them…

We decided to start with the Moussaka to share as an entree. It was on their specials board and said it was served with sour cream. I didn’t know how that was going to work but was curious to try it. I normally really love moussaka and am still looking for the perfect one.

It was very hard to take a decent photo because of the dim lighting but I hope you get an idea.

The moussaka was certainly special and not traditional.  I couldn’t see or taste any bechemel but then that probably wouldn’t have matched with the sour cream on top. I couldn’t find eggplant in there either but maybe it was. After all, what’s a moussaka without eggplant right?
It was absolutely delicious though. So much flavor! Makes me want to try to make it myself.
Hubby and I were fighting to make sure we got half each.

As per their menu, all meals come with “mammas” bread which was quite damper like. Very toasty warm and a little smokey tasting. I loved it!
The meals also come with potato salad and coleslaw? It was like a coleslaw sans mayonnaise.

The potato salad looked nice and it had spring onions in it. 
Hubby didn’t want to eat it before our mains came and when I say he didn’t want to eat it, I mean he didn’t want US to eat it. That includes me. I was starving and it was so hard not to.

For main I chose Karakjordjeva. The menu described it as “Kaffana’s version of a Karadjordjeva schnitzel (no bread crumbs) , char grilled tenderised veal filled with ricotta, danish feta and cooked streaky bacon.”

I’m not sure what I expected it to look like but probably not that.

That kind of looks like something the dog left behind.

I have to say though that it tasted quite exceptional.

When you cut into it the ricotta oozed out.

I didn’t know there was supposed to be bacon in there and couldn’t really taste it but it was really so rich and full of flavour that I couldn’t have eaten more than that small roll.

Hubby ordered the Pork Skewers “Char-grilled, crisp and tender skewered park scotch pieces”

Hubby said his was near heaven. I got to taste a little morsel too. They were just flavoured perfectly. Moist, tender with a gorgeous charcoal taste.

Though the portions seemed small I felt like I’d eaten a lot by the end.

If you’re a meat eater, it would be definitely worth it to save up a few pennies and head on down to Peel Street and have a meal at Kaffana. Don’t be like us though, do yourself a favour and order the meat platter!!!

The Curious Squire

Today on the Dining Diaries…

After a couple of false starts, we are curious no more!
Music and interesting decor made for topic of conversation and
Burgers and yummy finger foods to die for!

5teatdrink153curious3Diners today we were at The Curious Squire in North Adelaide; A hip, US-inspired hub for burgers, slow-cooked BBQ steaks, wings and ribs, plus craft beer and cider.

We have driven past this place so many times and even attempted to dine but they were always fully booked and it just never happened. Tonight we got lucky!
We really were only lucky because we had come fairly early. Our table was going to be booked a few hours later and there were reserved signs over most of the tables we saw.

I love the look and feel of this place. Rock music was playing, people working looked like they were enjoying their jobs and lots of other customers were around having a good time. It wasn’t so loud to be distracting though, just enough to make you want to be a part of it.


I love the dark furniture and the streaming light coming from the windows. There’s plenty of interesting things to read on the wall about James Squire himself!

The table numbers are large cards and there’s even a wall of cards in the dining room! I’m not sure what the significance is of a deck of cards but it would be something to look into.


The server who greeted us was really so very lovely and did as much as she could to make sure we could be served today.
We were left with some menus and after not eating for most of the day, were drooling in anticipation.

I couldn’t go past one of the specials that was written up on the board behind the bar.
Ben & Lamb burger; Toasted Blue Bun, Smoke pulled Lamb, Potato skin, mint jelly, lettuce, tomato and onion.
I probably should have paid more attention to the “mint jelly” part of that description!

Hubby ended up ordering the Trio of Sliders -pig mac, mother clucker and american cheeseburgerers;

But before those dishes came, we got some entree’s to start…

We had to try their wings! American Buffalo Wings – crispy fried chicken wingettes with our curiously different take on the famous frank’s hot sauce with ranch

On Wednesday’s they sell these for 50 cents each!

We also got the Cheesy Macho Nachos – 12 corn tortilla chips served with queso, refried beans, smashed avocado, sour cream and added texas chilli on the side.

I’m not much for wings but hubby definitely is and he just loved these.

Hubby said they had a strong vinegar based sauce and they were perfect!

Just like the way he makes them.

Although I don’t eat wings I tried one and could see they had been cooked well and everything was fresh and crispy. I was almost converted!

The Nacho’s were also really well done.

The cheesy sauce was gooey and oozed a little to the nacho’s below.

Again, all the sauces were fresh and the nacho’s themselves were large (not broken) and crispy.

The texas chili on the side was soooo delicious!! Again, a little too hot for my liking but I have a low tolerance. Hubby just loved it! The meat in there was so tender and the sauce had a beautifully sweet tomato taste. I couldn’t help dipping my fries in there later even though I knew it was hot!

The one thing that did bother me a little was that our mains were brought out before we were even halfway through our entree so we had a table full of food that was now all going to get cold. Perhaps it was just a mix up in the kitchen.

These buns were all full of flavour. They are not stingy when it comes to filling!
I also love the way they bring the food out on those silver trays.

Hubby said he really couldn’t fault a thing, it was all really great tasting. There was one he particularly liked that had a mustard sauce in it.

My burger was equally good! I wasn’t quite sure how a “BLUE” burger was going to look or even why you would want to do that though. It’s green in the picture, but when you bite into it, the inside is blue.

I instantly tasted the mint jelly and wished I’d asked to not have that in the burger. Thankfully, there really wasn’t a lot of it. The potato skin was more like a slice of cooked potato rather than skin but that too was ok.
It’s a really big burger so probably not something you’d order on a first date!!! I ended up having to take some of the insides out and eat them separately.

Overall, I’m so glad we came here. It’s seems to be a buzzing place and you really don’t mind spending your money when you know the service, food and atmosphere are going to be good!!
I definitely recommend going down to The Curious Squire and having a look at what they have to offer but go on a Wednesday if you can to take advantage of that wing special!!

The Sneaky Pickle

Today on the Dining Diaries…

A hungry ‘cowboy’ enters hungry, empties his pockets, and still leaves hungry…
Dim lighting is used, not for romantic purposes, but so you can’t see how small your serve is and…
Not sure how to deal with a waiter who joins you at your table to explain the menu and take your order.

Diners, you may think I like doing reviews where I write about all the things I didn’t like but in fact I loathe them and yet I would be disingenuous if I wrote anything but what I’m about to write about The Sneaky Pickle.

This place came with a HUGE recommendation from a previously trusted source so hubby and I were quite eager to try it out.

sp1.jpgIt’s location on Goodwood Rd is a little difficult to get to and the frontage is quite unappealing. We didn’t even know if they were open! Hubby tried the door and said it was still locked. We waited in the car for another ten minutes or so when finally I said I’d try the door… I couldn’t believe they’d still be closed when it’s after their advertised opening hours….
Turns out hubby hadn’t turned the handle…. they’d been open..
But honestly you wouldn’t know because it seems like you’re walking into a shop that hasn’t been used in years.
From the outside, we couldn’t hear or see anything going on inside.

When we finally did get inside I felt a little better. It seemed like a pretty cool place – American BBQ is their style. There were lots of decorations on the wall, heavy wood furniture, hipster looking waiters and it was dark. I mean really dark!
There was music playing that ranged from Country and Western to Sixties lounge jazz.


We were sitting right under the watchful eye of that big guy on the right there.

There’s lots of huge wooden benches/booths and hubby and I sat in one. A few minutes later the bearded waiter came and squashed in alongside us so he could explain how the menu works.

So they’ve got those BBQ meats on the top  of the menu. You pick the meats and quantity you want. That’s what they want you to do, and then you pick your sides. You do have a couple of options for sandwiches but they really want you to pick the meats and sides.
We didn’t have the Chicken thighs or Bourbon wings options on the menu we were given.

I don’t have a picture of the drinks menu but they mainly have American Beers and soda’s here.

So I went and ordered one each of the BBQ meats, a side of Texas Beans (+bacon + chili) and a serve of Bread Rolls. Remember when places would just serve you bread??
The menu says that the BBQ meats come with House pickles and BBQ sauce.

Well my dear diners, here is what we got for $39

See the pickle and sauce on the left bottom of the tray? That’s what they gave us to go with the BBQ meats. “All BBQ meats come with House pickles and BBQ sauce.”

Those bread rolls were tiny. One bite and they were gone. I mostly stuck to the beans because I’m usually not a big meat eater and nothing there looked appealing to me. The Brisket was ok but it had huge gobs of fat in it. The pulled pork was ok. Hubby really liked the rib but he wasn’t sure of the value for money seeing as one rib was $7. ONE.
Hubby didn’t like the sausage at all. It had a very smoky taste and seemed a bit gritty as well. I had a little of it but wouldn’t have been able to eat a whole one. I’m not sure what the herb or spice was in there.

I tried to take a few more photos of the food, getting a little closer on some of the meats…

I had to wonder why they kept the room so dark. The windows were furnished with heavy black curtains. Is it so you can pretend to be whisked away to Texas or so that you don’t see how small the serve is you’re getting?
I really didn’t like those camp style plates and trays they were using either. And they brought us that platter of food to share, but no side plates so we could actually eat our food in front of us instead of having to reach for the centre of the table and hope we didn’t drop any.

The food didn’t take long to be gone, not because we loved it, but because there wasn’t much there…. So we left poorer and still hungry…
But it was ok, we stopped in at a Maccas on the way home and filled up with a few little naughty things for a fraction of the money we’d spent at the Sneaky Pickle…

We remembered the quote “Everything is bigger in Texas” but then were reminded that we were actually not in Texas and it all made sense…

This place seems to have a bit of a cult following so please don’t just take my word for it.
If you do go though, be prepared ….

Burek Lounge

Today on the Dining Diaries…

We visit a place that would have vegetarians quaking in their boots,
Balkan music played along nicely in the background while we ate food from the region and
We almost got into meat sweats territory!!

Diners today we were at Burek Lounge.

This place has been popping up on my facebook newsfeed for some time, tempting me with pictures of enormous meat platters at very reasonable prices.

It just seemed too good to be true!

I had no idea where hubby was taking me as we just continued driving south along Tapley’s Hill Rd in Adelaide’s Western Suburbs. Even if I ask he won’t tell me, I’m supposed to just enjoy the “thing I can’t get out of” “surprise”

When he made the turn onto Grange rd, and then Findon rd, I twigged! We were going to Burek Lounge!
I’ve heard great things about this place so I was keen to see what it was like.

bur5When we got there I was a bit disappointed as it’s just a small shop front. It didn’t look like a restaurant, more like a shop that was once a corner deli, with cleared floor space for tables and chairs. It was neat, clean and modern looking, just a lot smaller then I expected.

As soon as we got out the car though, I could smell BBQ meat!! I’m not a huge meat lover but it really had me salivating! It just smelt so good!

The gentleman behind the counter was a little shy and soft spoken but was eager to tell us about the food. He said the food comes from the general Balkan region and at the same time, I noticed the music which I guess was also from the Balkan region. Loved that!

The menu was full of meat items although they did have a vegetarian pastry… still, if you’re vegetarian I’m not sure that this is the place for you…
Sadly they didn’t have any fries, wedges or even dips. But that was ok too because the food we had was really quite exceptional!

I must admit, when he said “wood fired pastries” I was thinking desserts…. but no, they’re savoury pastries. Seeing as we were having heavy meat mains, we went for the spinach and ricotta pastry to share for an entree.

We had told him we were sharing so he took the liberty to cut it in half.

Hubby was not happy with that at all because when he says “share” he means I get thirty percent and he gets seventy percent.

I’m not sure what kind of pastry that is. Maybe filo? The pastry was quite thick though and it didn’t really have a lot of taste. It was nice, but it was probably my least favourite thing I ate there today.

Perhaps a meat filled one would have been better. It’s a bit hard to say. I also suspect it was just heated in the microwave but I was really really hoping I was wrong.

The server brought the mains out pretty much right away and everything was magical from then on!

I chose the “Steak Serve” – Two Rib Eye Steaks with Turkish Bread and side of Greek Salad. However it didn’t come with a Greek Salad Side, it was a Potato Salad and it was just as nice.

You can see there is also a capsicum salsa on the plate. I can’t even begin to describe how good everything was. That meat was sooooo tender I could have blown on it and it would have come apart.  The Turkish bread was toasted perfectly, the capsicum salsa was just a lovely surprise that lifted everything on the plate. I was just in raptures with it!
I probably shouldn’t admit this but I ended up putting one of the pieces of meat in the Turkish bread and having it like a “steak sandwich”. Delicious!

Hubby ordered the “Mixed Grill” for one – Sausage, Pattie, Steak, Shaslick, 3 Cevapi and Turkish Bread.

He also ordered a Greek Salad….

Hubby said everything he had was good, but he didn’t seem to be as enthused as I was, and he’s the meat eater!!!

He didn’t have any complaints though. I tried some of his pattie and thought it was just bursting with amazing flavours!! These guys are passionate about BBQ meat!!

Even the salad was delicious!! There was a generous amount of dressing in there and the ingredients were so fresh! It just make such a difference!

I asked the server how long they’d been there and I think he said about four years, although they’ve only just picked up their Social Media pages in the last eighteen months or so.

If you haven’t already liked their facebook page and you live in Adelaide, I’d urge you to do so as they have regular specials that are really worth going down there for!

The Pickled Duck

Today on the Dining Diaries,

The size of the chili and the sour cream provided actually match the amount of wedges given,
The size and layout of the restaurant make our hearts go pitter, patter and
The size of the burger make us wonder if indeed, size does matter?

Ever since I’ve been writing this blog, I’ve had recommendations to visit The Pickled Duck.
Today, as we found ourselves in the area we thought, why not?

It was a strange time to be eating – 3.30pm. We had both missed lunch and didn’t want to wait three hours or so for dinner but The Pickled Duck have all day dining so that was helpful!

The first thing we noticed as we walked in was how large and clean the restaurant was. High ceilings and heavy wood featured in the decor giving us a relaxed, family style restaurant feeling. Maybe something Mike Brady from the Brady Bunch would have designed.  It made us feel comfortable!
We were given menus and told to come up to the bar when we were ready to order.

The menu itself was simple and easy to understand. They mostly have burgers, pizza’s and a few salads as well. They also had desserts on the menu, including dessert pizzas!

From what I had heard, burgers were the specialty so I was eager to try one. Hubby decided to go for some sliders so that he could get a good idea of what a few different burgers would taste like. I think the slider option is a great one for exactly that reason and on this menu you were able to order as many as you want, starting from just one which is great if you have someone with a small appetite in your party.

The restaurant is next to a bottle shop and they have a joining door which could prove to be handy. They encourage their diners to take advantage of the wine cellar where they showcase a fine collection of Australian and world renowned wines. They also have a unique selection of craft beers from some of the finest South Australian microbreweries.
I did think there were lots of great options on the wine menu and ordered one of my favourites.

I did feel a little disappointed when the meals came out. In retrospect, they were very filling and I’m sure the size would be big enough for the average diner but my first impression was that it was a little small.

I ordered the Swiss Beef Burger.
Beef, sautéed swiss mushrooms, caramelised onions, rocket, gorgonzola cheese sauce.

It was such a tasty little package!! The meat was just gorgeously seasoned and the caramelised onions.. mmmm is there a more perfect combination? They weren’t stingy on the muchrooms either and together, it was really a delight to eat. Hubby was both amused and horrified as he watched me trying to eat this with sauces dripping down my fingers and smeared on my face. But that’s got to tell you that what you’re eating is good right??

He made a really good choice ordering the four sliders.

BEEF SLIDER- smoky BBQ onion jam
PORK SLIDER- asian slaw, baja sauce
DUCK SLIDER- pickled green onion, carrot slaw
CHICKEN SLIDER -smashed avocado, rocket

He started off with the pork slider. He said he found it a little dry but it was still very good and tasty.
The next one he tried was the beef slider and that was such a brilliant explosion of taste in his mouth that he decided to keep that one till last. He loved the bbq sauce – He said it reminded him of bbq ribs.
His third slider was the chicken slider. He said that was delicious also and was smothered in mayonnaise.
Last of all was the duck slider. We had forgotten that was one of the options and as we don’t often eat duck, were interested in how it would taste. Hubby said it was nice but not his favourite. I’m not into pickled onions in my burgers so I don’t think I would have liked this one myself.

FullSizeRender (35)We also ordered some wedges and I’m just mentioning them as surprisingly, we even had a little sour cream and chili left over after the wedges were gone… That never happens!!

I liked that the server came to check on us to make sure everything was as we’d ordered. I had told him that I’d heard good things about this place and he said must have been because of his great service which I thought was a good response!

All in all we had a nice time at The Pickled Duck. The food is definitely above average and you can tell they really care about what they’re going to present you.
Definitely a recommend from me!
